A new mindset paves the way for a pro-ball contract

“Xavier” was a talented men’s basketball player who rarely received the recognition he deserved. But despite his performance and observable success, he often struggled on the inside, wondering if he’d ever reach his goal of playing professionally.

When he came to us, we explored the different layers of his struggles and uncovered the impact they had on his mindset and overall game. With a deeper understanding of his mind and several new techniques designed to enhance his focus and concentration, he was able to let go of distracting thoughts and emotions—thus maximizing his performance on the court.

Transforming his mindset and mental resilience led to a successful tryout and paved the way to a life-changing pro basketball contract.

What is Sport Psychology?

What is Sport Psychology?

There is a lot of confusion around sport psychology and how it’s different from traditional psychology. And, when you’re an elite or high-performing athlete, it’s important to know the differences so you can make an informed decision and get back to performing at your highest level.

Are Mental Blocks Real?

Are Mental Blocks Real?

When athletes talk about mental blocks, they are usually talking about a situation where they know how to do a specific skill but their mind gets in the way. we need to do more than simply recognize that the mind-body connection exists. We need to train the mind in addition to training the body.

School Counselor vs. Sport Psychologist: What's the Difference?

Embracing Vulnerability: The Hidden Strength in Sport Psychology

Vulnerability is a sign of strength, not weakness. By prioritizing mental health and sport psychology training you can unlock your full athletic potential.

Your career rests on your mindset

We help pro athletes take their mental game to the next level so you can always be at your best. Remember, the body can only go as far as the mind will take it so make sure you train your mind, train your body, and train to WIN! Your career depends on it.

What sports do you work with?

At WHSP we work with athletes competing in ALL sports including:

  • Team sports
      • Football, Baseball, Soccer, Basketball, Hockey, Softball, Volleyball, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, etc.
  • Individual sports
      • Tennis, Golf, Gymnastics, Diving, Figure Skating, Swimming, Running/CC/T&F, Triathlon, Ski/Snowboard, Mixed Martial Arts, etc.
  • Other sports
      • X-Games/Extreme sports, CrossFit Games, Equestrian, Climbing, Free Diving, Jockey/Horse racing, etc.
  • We also work with adaptive athletes and teams competing in sports adapted and designed for their abilities.

Do you offer traditional mental health services too?

Yes, we do. Some common topics we address with student-athletes include: anxiety, depression, grief, loss, ADHD, family relationships, trauma, abuse, OCD, eating disorders, and more.

How long are your sessions?

The first appointment is typically 60-75 minutes. Follow-up appointments are usually 45-50 minutes. Sessions with full teams or organizations vary in length based on the purpose of the session.

How often do you typically meet with clients?

Most clients schedule appointments every 1-2 weeks. As we wrap up the first session, our staff shares their thoughts and recommendations about the frequency and timing of appointments.

Do you offer virtual appointments?

Yes! Although we encourage in-person sessions, we recognize the challenges of a busy schedule (and the fact that some athletes live outside of middle Tennessee) and meet with clients virtually on an as-needed basis.

What does a typical session look like for an individual athlete?

We like to combine two main things in your sessions:

  1. Discussing your concerns in a way that helps you develop a deeper understanding of the issue as well as why it is troubling you.
  2. Teaching and practicing mental skills, strategies, and techniques you can use to help you manage those concerns more effectively both in your sport and in daily life.

Are you able to help an injured athlete?

Yes, in fact, the mental side of injury, surgery, and long-term rehab is one of our specialties. We help injured athletes improve their mind-body connection and build the mental tools and techniques they need to recover better, faster, and more prepared to return to their sport.

Have you worked with professional athletes before?

Yes, many of our clients compete at the elite levels of sport including professional athletics.

Do you offer diagnostic testing for ADHD?

Yes, whether you are looking to clarify IF you (or your child) live with ADHD or you (or your child) already have a diagnosis and need an updated assessment, we can complete the testing you need to formally confirm (or not) an ADHD diagnosis.

  • NOTE: Completing the testing process is an evaluation and does NOT automatically mean you (or your child) will receive an ADHD diagnosis.
  • NOTE: For athletes who are subject to drug testing protocols, our testing process includes the elements that you need to receive a medical exemption for various medications that are often used to treat ADHD

Do you talk to parents or coaches about the things an athlete tells you in sessions?

It is important for our clients to know that we treat their privacy with the utmost respect and dignity. As an adult you have specific rights and privileges regarding your privacy. Specific questions about privacy and how we maintain confidentiality will be reviewed during our first session and can be discussed during ANY of your appointments.

What else can you do to help me protect my privacy?

We understand and value your desire for privacy, especially as someone who is easily recognized in public. We intentionally use an office that is “tucked away” from highly visible roads, shopping centers, and businesses. We also use strategic approaches to scheduling appointments that minimizes the likelihood of crossing paths with the general public.
